Local Drugs & Alcohol Task Force Community Representatives

local community

Local Drugs Task Forces were set up in 1997 to develop a more effective response to the drug crisis that was devastating many communities. Taskforces comprise a partnership between the statutory, voluntary and community sectors. Taskforces develop and implement a local drugs strategy for their areas by co-ordinating all relevant programmes and working to address gaps in services. In 2013, alcohol was included in the remit of the Drugs Task Forces.

Community Voices

Community voices are esential in the response to drugs. The overall objective of having Community Representatives on Drug and Alcohol Task Forces is to ensure that the work of the Task Forces is based on and informed by the reality of drug use and how it impacts on communities and, the need to identify the most appropriate, relevant and timely responses for those communities.

The Community Representative Network

CityWide facilitates the Taskforce Community Representatives Network by bringing people together to support each other, exchange information and to identify key policy issues and develop responses. The network meets a number of times each year to discuss issues specific to the role of community reps.

Who are the Representatives?

There are six community representatives on each LDATF. Community Reps are nominated in a number of ways but the following criteria should be considered:

  • That there is an appropriate geographical spread of representation for the area;
  • Groups with a strong track record in community development should nominate
  • Community Reps should have or develop the relevant knowledge and experience of the drugs issue necessary to play a full and productive role on the Taskforce;
  • People should have the active support of the communities they represent
