Dublin North West T.D Pat Carey appointed new Minister of State with responsibility for drugs

The Government has appointed Mr. Pat Carey, T.D. for Dublin North West, to the post of Minister for State with responsibility for the Drug Strategy and Community Affairs in the Department Community, Rural, and Gaeltacht Affairs.

Personal Profile

Born Castlemaine, Co. Kerry November 1947. Educated in Presentation Brothers, Milltown, Co. Kerry: St. Patrick's Teachers' Training College, Drumcondra: UCD (BA): TCD (H Dip Ed). Full time Public Representative and former Vice Principal, St. Finian's School, Finglas. First elected 1997.

Vice-Chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs up to November 2004. Member of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Affairs and the Oireachtas Committee on the Scrutiny of EU Legislation up to November 2004. Alternate Member to the Convention on the Future of Europe. Member of the Forum on Europe. Chairman of the British Irish Interparliamentary Body. Member of the National Economic Social Forum. Member of Amnesty International.

Additional Involvement

He has been a non-executive director of (1) Irish Council for the European Movement, promoting awareness of and to give information on the European project; (2) Ballymun Local Drugs Task Force, providing programmes of drug awareness prevention and treatment.
