National Drugs Strategy 2009-2016 Public Consultation

5 Mar 2008

The Minister for State with responsibility for the National Drugs Strategy, Mr. Pat Carey, T.D., recently established a Steering Group, comprising representatives of the key statutory and community & voluntary interests involved tackling drug misuse, to develop proposals for a new National Drugs Strategy to cover the period 2009 -2016.

The Steering Group, chaired by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, will be preparing proposals on the new Strategy for submission to the Minister for State before the end of the year. To assist the Steering Group in defining the strategic direction that it should take in relation to drugs policy over
the coming years, all interested parties are invited to submit views regarding the shape and content of the next National Drugs Strategy.

A number of public consultation meetings will also take place in various locations around the country. Full details on these meetings will be publicised nearer to the events.

The current National Drugs Strategy (2001-2008) "Building on Experience" is available for downloading from the Department's website www.pobail.ie. Other relevant documents, including the Mid-Term Review of the National Drugs Strategy, and the Report of the Working Group on Drugs Rehabilitation, are also available on that website.

Written submissions (electronic format favoured) should be sent before Friday 4th April 2008, to:
