Campaign to highlight drugs issues in the 2007 General Election

19 Dec 2006

At the last community representatives meeting on October 6th, it was agreed to develop a campaign to highlight the drugs issue in the general election in 2007. A number of steps were laid out:

 A campaign document will be drawn up by Citywide, to include a short summary of the current situation in our communities and a statement of the key issues/demands as outlined at previous community reps meetings. This document will be completed shortly.

 The campaign document will be launched at a press conference, a date at the end of January is being suggested to coincide with reopening of Dail.

 Campaign document will be circulated widely to politicians and media and meetings will be sought with party spokespersons to discuss issues and look for support.

 A leaflet for local use will be drawn up, based on the campaign document. The format of the leaflet will be based on questions to ask candidates in the general election.

 Citywide will co-ordinate on a particular day closer to the election date for all community reps and local groups to contact politicians on the same day in relation to the drugs issue.

 A seminar for community representatives will take place in April 2007 to highlight the drugs crisis as an election issue.
