Citywide calls for proper CE Review involving representative groups

The Community Employment (CE) Programme has been targeted for a massive 66% cut in their training and materials budget. Following a major email campaign by community groups, Citywide networks and the Trade Unions, Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton announced that there would be an immediate review of CE stating that "No Community Employment scheme will close pending the outcome of this review..".

Citywide has written to Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton calling for the cuts to be taken off the table immediately and to issue the terms of reference of the review. The review must involve representatives of all stakeholders. It has to recognise the crucial community service role played by CE and the many ways in which CE participants are supported to make progress in their lives.

Budget 2012

The combined impact of Budget 2012 will be severely felt by communities working to respond to problems caused by drug and alcohol misuse. The budget outlined cuts of:

  • 7% in funding under the drugs initiative, affecting local and regional drug task forces.
  • 12% in HSE funding.
  • 5% in family support.
  • 24% in drug-related education projects
  • 66% cut in training and material budgets from FAS for Community Employment Schemes
  • 100% cut in funding for mainstreamed projects funded under the Dept of Environment, Community & Local Government.

Citywide & Dales Seminar - Emerging Trends in Poly Drug Use

The Dales Centre in conjunction with Citywide hosted a Seminar on Dec 7th to look at the emerging trends in drug use in local communities. The seminar heard that the use of crack-cocaine, crystal meth, mephedrone, alcohol and skunk are on the increase.

Review of Structures of National Drugs Strategy

Minister Shortall announced a Review of the Structures of the National Drugs Strategy in September 2011 and submissions were sought from key stakeholders.

Citywide welcomed the structural review - we believe that the structures of the National Drugs Strategy are not working properly.
